Soccer results Nov. 24 2008

Matthäus' team played an awful first half with a result of 0-2, the goals due to goalie mistakes. They woke up in the second half to spurt up to 3-2, ending up with a good result of 3-3 to capture one point in the rankings in spite of driving snow!
Jennie's team also played a poor first period against first place Trent, though our goalie blocked a penalty kick, ending the period at 1-0. They too, woke up in the second and third periods, holding the opponents to only 2-0, and, playing much better soccer than the opposing team did. But, as they say, only goals count! Indoor practice starts on the 12th of December here in Margreid, meaning no more chauffeuring for me for a while! Yay!

Mandy of Mandy Mystiques made a few new kits this last week and decided to give them away on her blog just for posting a comment. So I posted, and won! This is the cute kit I won...exactly the one I had wanted! I'll have to get cracking on a LO and post it for you here!

Want my autograph?

I have been published! Now, don't get too excited, it's not that important. But I really didn't think it would happen.
Eduard commutes a total of about 100km (62mi) a day, going to work in the morning and afternoon, returning home at lunch and in the evening. On his way home recently, he noticed a new mileage sign along his route. Huge, brand new and yet unblemished, they had written our village name wrong! I set off the next day to take a picture of it and send it in to the local newspaper, the Dolomiten (Circulation ca. 55,000 and the main German language newspaper in our area; see very interesting history). A few days passed with no answer or result. Then today, TA-DA!!! There it was on our district's page along with my photo! I read the newspaper online, and when I saw it, I started whooping. The kids, who were eating breakfast, thought I had finally hit the point of mental no return! (Which, I am sure, they await daily!)
The text says:
Margreid with a "d"
Margreid - Margreid is a village name which is often spelled wrong. "Magreid, Margreit, Magreit ... we are already used to that; but that the public works department can't even write correctly is a sad situation", writes "Dolomiten" Reporter Reka Hukari Ranigler, who photographed the large, brand-new street sign on the Wine Road shortly after Lake Caldaro.

Two local derbies were on our schedule this weekend. Matthäus' team fought hard against 3rd place Tramin on a field that was 80% mud, but eventually lost. They were strong in the first half and probably surprised Tramin into confusion, but the home team regained their composure in the second half to win 2-1. A good result for our boys, since Tramin has an average win of 3-1.
Eduard watched Jennie's game in Aldein at an altitude of nearly 4000 feet and surprisingly was warmer than I was down at the valley floor! Jennie still has her cough and congestion, and the altitude didn't help at all. She played badly and not for long, but the girls kept the score to 1-1 against their local competitors, who were in 9th place before this game.

Prosecco!
Posted on Samstag, November 15, 2008 at 10:45 PM by Reka
Eduard and I took four days off to travel around the Prosecco area of Italy, in the province of Treviso. The first three days consisted of patches of gray surrounded by rain, but I managed to take a few pictures anyway, which I have added to my gallery starting here.
The Prosecco region is named after one of its most important products, a white wine made in three styles - regular, spumante (sparkling) and frizzante (semi-sparkling). The Treviso area is also well-known for its many varieties of radicchio. We had a hard time of it with all the good food and wine, but fought our way valiantly through every meal. ;-) We ended up coming home with over 25 bottles of Prosecco (from 3.50-15 euros) and a desire to go back again.

Soccer results Nov. 10 2008

We had mixed results this week. Matthäus' team won, but their ranking didn't change because of other games.
Jennie's team won one, lost one. Jennie, however, shot another goal; the first one in the game against Obermais! Unfortunately, we were on a short vacation and didn't get to see the game. Carlotte and Sebi went to the game since it was in Meran and cheered her on!
Both kids have changed positions recently. They used to play defense and now have moved up to midfield. Strangely enough, both to right wing positions. Matthäus' coach tried him out in defensive midfield (center), but it was just not his position and he had terrible problems playing. You would think it would have worked out well coming from defense, but apparently he needs the space as a wing to use his speed to the advantage. Now if we could just get rid of Jennie's cough and congestion so she can breathe enough to play a whole game again!
I was happy to hear Jennie's complaint after their loss to Sterzing. She complained that the winning team did not even shake hands with them after the game and compliment them on their playing. I am glad our girls have good manners and uphold the ideal of fair play.
This was our girls' last home game for the fall season, and since it was on a Sunday at 11am, our president, a professional cook, invited all team members and spectators to a big pot of pasta after the game. This is NOT common here. We have never been invited to anything at any away games anywhere else, or even been offered a free drink but we always extend the invitation to the opposing team as well. Unfortunately, the girls from the other team again did not mingle with ours, preferring to eat their meal far away from the rest of the people. Too bad for them, and for me, another point scored for our girls!
