Matthäus' team played an awful first half with a result of 0-2, the goals due to goalie mistakes. They woke up in the second half to spurt up to 3-2, ending up with a good result of 3-3 to capture one point in the rankings in spite of driving snow!
Jennie's team also played a poor first period against first place Trent, though our goalie blocked a penalty kick, ending the period at 1-0. They too, woke up in the second and third periods, holding the opponents to only 2-0, and, playing much better soccer than the opposing team did. But, as they say, only goals count! Indoor practice starts on the 12th of December here in Margreid, meaning no more chauffeuring for me for a while! Yay!

Two local derbies were on our schedule this weekend. Matthäus' team fought hard against 3rd place Tramin on a field that was 80% mud, but eventually lost. They were strong in the first half and probably surprised Tramin into confusion, but the home team regained their composure in the second half to win 2-1. A good result for our boys, since Tramin has an average win of 3-1.
Eduard watched Jennie's game in Aldein at an altitude of nearly 4000 feet and surprisingly was warmer than I was down at the valley floor! Jennie still has her cough and congestion, and the altitude didn't help at all. She played badly and not for long, but the girls kept the score to 1-1 against their local competitors, who were in 9th place before this game.

Soccer results Nov. 10 2008
Posted on Montag, November 10, 2008 at 9:27 AM by Reka
We had mixed results this week. Matthäus' team won, but their ranking didn't change because of other games.
Jennie's team won one, lost one. Jennie, however, shot another goal; the first one in the game against Obermais! Unfortunately, we were on a short vacation and didn't get to see the game. Carlotte and Sebi went to the game since it was in Meran and cheered her on!
Both kids have changed positions recently. They used to play defense and now have moved up to midfield. Strangely enough, both to right wing positions. Matthäus' coach tried him out in defensive midfield (center), but it was just not his position and he had terrible problems playing. You would think it would have worked out well coming from defense, but apparently he needs the space as a wing to use his speed to the advantage. Now if we could just get rid of Jennie's cough and congestion so she can breathe enough to play a whole game again!
I was happy to hear Jennie's complaint after their loss to Sterzing. She complained that the winning team did not even shake hands with them after the game and compliment them on their playing. I am glad our girls have good manners and uphold the ideal of fair play.
This was our girls' last home game for the fall season, and since it was on a Sunday at 11am, our president, a professional cook, invited all team members and spectators to a big pot of pasta after the game. This is NOT common here. We have never been invited to anything at any away games anywhere else, or even been offered a free drink but we always extend the invitation to the opposing team as well. Unfortunately, the girls from the other team again did not mingle with ours, preferring to eat their meal far away from the rest of the people. Too bad for them, and for me, another point scored for our girls!

Soccer results Oct. 27 2008

This week was one of downs and one "up". The kids lost both of their games. Pretty disappointing, especially since Matthäus played against the team from last place, but that is the way it goes sometimes. Jennie's team played really well, but, in the end, the goals are what count.
The one "up" is that Matthäus was asked to be on the bench for the first team. The new players usually only get to play a few minutes at the end of the game, but it is a good introduction for them to the team strategy and players. This game ended 0-0 with Weinstrasse having lost one of their players to a red card, so no newbies were substituted. Better luck next time, Matthäus!

Big soccer news!!!
Posted on Freitag, Oktober 24, 2008 at 9:46 AM by Reka
Yesterday was another great soccer day for the Ranigler family! First of all, Matthäus, who plays with the junior team, was one of the players to be called to train and scrimmage with the first team yesterday. He was proud, and when he finally got home at 10:30, tired and hungry!
Then Jennie came home late from practice because she had to talk with the president and the coach. She has been named on the provisional list for the all-stars team of the province for U14 girls!! This team consists usually of one or two girls from each team and meets to practice for a game against a slightly younger boys' team.
Way to go, kids!!

Soccer results Oct 20

This week was a calm one for us. Jennie's league has an uneven number of teams, so this week was their turn to sit out the weekend. She was glad to have a break. And Matthäus' game was postponed until the 29th. The other teams all played, of course, but there were no changes in the rankings. The good news for Jennie was that the two teams behind them in the rankings played, and the right one won - the underdog - so they only passed up the opposing team. Had the other team won, they would have passed up Jennie's team in the rankings too!
Matthäus was asked to play with the club's top team this weekend for the first time!! Unfortunately, he had another appointment. The coach assured him he will be asking him again.
Next week Matthäus will be playing against his team from last year, Auer, last in the rankings with 0 points.

Soccer results Oct. 13 2008

A good week for the Ranigler family! Both teams won. The biggest news is that Jennie played midfield (instead of defense) this time and shot her first goal of the season! Her hands flew up to cover her face when it happened; she was so surprised! Afterwards she told us she actually wanted to pass to her team colleague in the center of the penalty box and was mortified that it hadn't worked.
Sebi, our nephew, also won this week. He is his team's goalkeeper, and has kept the goal clean for a goal difference of 22-0 in 5 games. Needless to say, they are first in their group. Way to go, Sebi! Sebi is playing against a lot of teams from our area this season. Unfortunately, all of them have been home games for him, so we haven't seen him in action yet this season.

Jennie's team played real soccer this week. I mean, not kids' soccer. A good game in position, tactics and technique.
Matthäus' team was not so fortunate, being up against the number one team. Three of his team got red carded. Why do boys of this age have to be so hotheaded? The cards were reactions to injustices from the other team's players and could have been avoided. Now they have a short team for the next two games.

This week, the team Jennie's team beat last week 11-0 lost 0-12. Poor girls! One of the moms told me they hadn't even had enough players to start 2 weeks before the first game. I hope they don't lose heart!

A new start
Posted on Donnerstag, September 04, 2008 at 8:50 PM by Reka
Seeing as I hadn't updated my website for five (yep, 5!) years, I decided to redo it as a blog.
For those of you who don't know me, I am Oregon born and raised, but now living in northern Italy in the middle of the Dolomites. I am a WAHM, teaching English and translating for various associations. I have been here now for almost half of my life (it will be 24 years in March) and have been married to Eduard for nearly that long. We have two kids: Matthäus will be 18 (and of driving age - yikes!) in October. Jennie will be 13 at the end of the month. Both of them are fanatic soccer players for Weinstrasse Süd and FC Unterland Damen.
I am looking forward to this blog as a means of keeping my friends and family updated on life over here!
